The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the CyI are represented by three research centers: the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CASTORC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.
The CyI invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Paleo – Climate Modelling who will contribute to research on past climate change in the eastern Mediterranean region. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the application of climate models for the investigation of past Millennia climate variations in Cyprus and the wider region. The research will also include analysis of climate proxy data and collaboration with CyI’s STARC research on climate related topics, themes and phenomena in the archaeology, art and architecture of past societies in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities:
- Review of existing knowledge regarding the climate of Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean (EM) during past Millennia,
- Adjustment and application of a global earth system model for relevant paleo-climatic simulations,
- Evaluation of model output based on climate proxy datasets,
- Assistance in the regional networking and coordination activities of the research group,
- Collaboration with STARC on topics related to climate change and impact in past societies,
- Dissemination of the research findings in scientific and public fora.
Job Requirements
Required Qualifications
- A PhD in Atmospheric or Environmental Sciences or equivalent
- Up to two (2) years of postdoctoral or research experience in a relevant field
- Experience in climate modelling and data assimilation for climate reconstructions
- Experience in computer programming (Fortran)
- Presentation of scientific results to scientific and general audiences/ Presentations in scientific conferences
- Publications in scientific journals
- Strong analytical and organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a good team player.
The appointment will be of a full time basis, initially for a fixed term period of one (1) year with the potential of contract renewal depending on performance and availability of funds.
