01/07/2017 - Συνέδριο: 8th Biennial PhD Symposium (Λονδίνο)

On Saturday 1st July 2017, the Hellenic Observatory will host the 8th Biennial PhD Symposium on Contemporary Greece and Cyprus. The core aim of the Symposium is to provide a platform for exchange and to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and ideas between young scholars currently undertaking research on Greece and Cyprus. Participants are invited to present a part of their thesis at panels covering a wide range of disciplines and interests. Here, they will receive feedback from peers and Hellenic Observatory academics whilst being exposed to new concepts, methods and content brought by the other participants. This year’s Symposium will be organised into panel discussions each with a narrow disciplinary focus, and two plenary sessions that may address broader themes relating to Greece or Cyprus, or indeed questions of methodology and planning in the delivery of a PhD thesis. Ultimately it is hoped through this one-day conversation, that students will be equipped with new tools and fresh ideas which can be carried forward into their remaining years of study.

In addition to the PhD students and LSE academics, the Symposium welcomes a number of distinguished external participants who act as speakers at the plenary sessions. At the last Symposium, Professors Nicos Christodoulakis (Professor of Economic Analysis, Athens University of Economics and Business) and Manolis Galenianos delivered lectures on the relationship between socio-economic hardship and the rise of the far-right in Greece and the external dimension of the Greek economic crisis respectively.
