Within the framework of the Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development honors outstanding efforts of individuals, institutions, organizations or other entities engaged in ESD activities. ESD empowers learners to take informed decisions and responsible actions for environmental integrity, economic viability and a society, for present and future generations, while respecting cultural diversity. It is about lifelong learning, and is an integral part of quality education. ESD is holistic and transformational education which addresses learning content and outcomes, pedagogy and the learning environment. It achieves its purpose by transforming society. The Global Action Programme on ESD followed-up by the United Nations Decade on ESD, intends to generate and scale-up action in all levels and areas of education and learning to accelerate progress towards sustainable development.
Eligibility
Individuals, institutions, organizations or other entities engaged in ESD. Nominations must focus on a specific project or programme of the nominee. Each government or non-governmental organization can submit up to three nominations.
Prizes
Funded by the Government of Japan, the Prize consists three annual awards of USD 50,000 for each recipient.
