The Liggins Institute at the University of Auckland is one of the world’s leading centres for research on fetal and child health, nutrition, development, epigenetics and evolutionary medicine. The institute has a history of attracting the high calibre research students and clinical fellows from the Asia-Pacific region and around the world. Our internationally recognised staff lead a multidisciplinary approach to improving lifelong health through research into the developmental origins of health and disease. Our location within the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences suits dynamic, collaborative students who have a thirst for knowledge and a desire to make a difference to people’s lives. Our aim is to rapidly translate discoveries in basic science into therapies and strategies that will prevent or help people manage major health problems in the 21st century.
A number of PhD studentships are available in our internationally recognised research programme in the following areas:
- Perinatal and Maternal translational research for lifelong health
- Endocrinology and nutrition in growth and development
- The epigenomics of non-communicable diseases
- The role of the microbiome in non-communicable diseases

Applications are currently being accepted for 2016 enrolments. Students with a BSc (Hons), MSc degree or equivalent, and a strong academic record, are invited to apply for PhD study. Successful applicants will be supported through the University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship scheme (NZ$27,000 tax-free stipend per annum, plus tuition fees, for 3 years).
